Spacing Road Show to hit Edmonton and Calgary!

Spacing magazine is going national!

In support of its first national issue, publisher Matthew Blackett and editor Shawn Micallef are heading out on a cross-Canada tour to celebrate the launch of the national issue and to lead discussions on urbanism and city design in the nation's big cities.

You may remember Matt from when he was an AMC speaker a few years ago and shared his tips for clever marketing and circulation campaigns. Based on how noteworthy Toronto-based Spacing has been to date, the national issue of Spacing is sure to be a good read.

The Spacing tour will hit Edmonton on Wednesday, June 22 at the Art Gallery of Alberta and Calgary on Friday, June 24 at Bankers Court.

Each party will feature a panel with the Spacing team and three local panelists to discuss the top public spaces in Edmonton and Calgary as well as the state of good design. Panelists are still to be announced although they've just confirmed local blogger Mack Male for Edmonton.

COST: $5 (gets you in the door and a copy of the new national issue)
See the Edmonton and Calgary Facebook event pages for full details.

Publishing in the Digital Age - Luncheon with Wired.com

These days, the lines between being a publisher, editor, and technologist are blurring. While content remains king, multiplying forms of delivery and consumption require both the ability to adapt, and the savvy to take advantage of new business models and opportunities.

At the "Publishing in the Digital Age" luncheon Evan Hansen, Editor-in-Chief of
Wired.com, will provide insight into the worlds of digital, online and mobile platform publishing through his experiences as the steward of one of the world’s most innovative and viewed online sites.

For those that decry the death of print and paid content, Hansen offers an inspirational perspective—that we are on the verge of a brave new world that encourages content providers to act as brand managers, leveraging traditional print and online presences to colonize an array of growing business opportunities: including apps, e-books and digital interactive ads.

"Publishing in the Digital Age" is presented by the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association, as part of the Joint Marketing Initiative lecture series, in partnership with the Calgary Chapter of the Canadian Marketing Association, Digital Alberta, and the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association.

Register for "Publishing in the Digital Age" by Thursday June 16, 2011 at 4:00pm. Registration will close before June 16 if all available spots are sold. Space is limited, so register early!

Symposium - Secure Footing in a Changing Literary Landscape

This full-day event, sponsored by the Writers’ Union of Canada and Canadian Heritage, is designed to address the creative and financial questions that arise as writers navigate print-based and digital literary landscapes. Writers – unpublished, emerging, or established – will gain an insight into their role in the digitalization of the literary industry. The symposium also explores the importance of community and the need for writers to develop their own writing community.

Authors Betsy Warland and Ross Laird will illuminate the new landscape of digital literature and publishing and will discuss its impact on traditional modes of creation and publishing. A particular emphasis will be placed on emerging modes of creativity, innovation, economics, and community. Kelly Duffin, the Union’s executive director, will discuss authors’ contracts in the digital age.

The Calgary symposium (events will be held across the country) is March 9, 2011 at the University of Calgary, Olympic Volunteer Center, 1833 Crowchild Trail NW.

AIRdirondack Art Project Auction

AIRdirondack Art Project Auction

There’s a new chair in town. It’s called the AIRdirondack, a play on Airdrie and Adirondack, and to explain it simply, the AIRdirondack is what cows were to Calgary:

“Remember the cow promotion? Artists created amazing works of art using cow statues as their muse. Well, we had the idea that Airdrie needed its own fun identity project that gave us both a heightened awareness for the creative talent in the area and a tourism effort to draw visitors to town and give them a reason to explore,” says Sherry Shaw-Froggatt, owner of Frog Media Inc. (which publishes airdrielife).

So Shaw-Froggatt and Veronica Funk, one of Airdrie’s most prolific painters, decided the time had come to ‘chair’ the project.

The artists who have been selected to take part in addition to Funk are Cheryl Bakke Martin, Brenda Campbell, Glen Collin, Maureen Demanuele, Susan Harris, Lori Presiloski, Rhea Warholik, Joelle & Carol White, Michelle Wiebe and Jane Romanishko.

Eleven of the chairs were unveiled June 12 at the Empty Bowls Festival in Nose Creek Park. Tthe chairs are now on public display at 12 locations around the city, including City Hall, Genesis Place, Fulton’s Home Hardware, Airdrie Co-op, Airdrie Public Library, both TD Canada Trust locations and all four Ravenswood show homes.

The works of art will be auctioned off October 14, 2010 to raise funds to develop future space for the arts community.

Rhyme 'em, Cowboy - Poetry at the Palamino

On Thursday, April 29 -- To cap off National Poetry Month -- Talonbooks, Freehand Books, filling Station and Coach House Books are teaming up to bring Calgary's poetry fans and readers 'Rhyme 'em, Cowboy,' a celebration of new poetry at The Palomino.

This event, hosted by the Griffin Prize-winning author of Eunoia, Christian Bök, will feature five great poets (Calgarians and out-of-towners alike) reading from brand-new books (and the brand-new issue of Calgary's own fillingStation). You'll hear and see poetry based on the harmonic music series, visual poetry based on anachronistic alphabets like Shorthand and Unifon, manifestoes of documentation and a not-overly-handy guide on how to write.

The readings will be followed by a musical set from Steve Van Kampen (from Beija Flor). 'Rhyme 'em, Cowboy' promises to be the most entertaining, feel-good poetry event of the the month, and a stellar way to end National Poetry Month.

Pages Books on Kensington will be on hand with copies of the poets' books and copies of fillingStation.

Taking a hard look: Money-saving strategies for publishers
There is money to be saved in most, if not all, magazine budgets. Of course publishers should pursue efficiency whenever they can; but in hard times, it's even more important to trim wisely and well. In this seminar, magazine consultant D. B. Scott will examine the typical magazine budgets and explore the kinds of hard questions that need to be asked by the people who manage them. Where is the greatest potential for saving money? And areas where it is penny-wise, but pound foolish to cut? The seminar will provide an opportunity to talk about attending magazines' particular challenges and to identify at least one area everyone can dig into when they get back to the office.

About the Speaker
D. B. Scott (David), the President of Impresa Communications Limited, has built a solid reputation as a consultant, writer, blogger, teacher, market researcher, publisher and editor. His concentration and specialty is the magazine industry. He has been called on for advice in such critical areas as strategic planning, content development, marketing, launches and relaunches, redesigns, audience surveys and focus groups, meeting facilitation and review and development of production and publishing systems. He is a member of Magazines Canada' professional development committee and its Travelling Consultants program. He teaches The Business of Magazine Publishing at Ryerson University in the Chang School for Continuing Education.
